Gennaro Savastano Elected President of LeGaL

LeGaL, The LGBT Bar Association and Foundation of Greater New York, is pleased to announce that Gennaro Savastano has been elected President.

Savastano is an Associate in the Appellate/Legal Unit at Weitz & Luxenberg.  Prior to being elected President, Savastano served on the Board of Directors and as Vice Chair of the Judiciary Committee.

"I am very grateful that LeGaL's other board members have entrusted me with the honor of shepherding our organization," said Savastano.  "While LeGaL has so much to be proud of and celebrate, we also have to acknowledge the looming threats on the horizon.  We must remain vigilant in our commitment to safeguarding the rights of the LGBT community, and I'm eager to roll up my sleeves to help protect the progress we have made and strengthen this organization."

In addition to litigating, Savastano has been serving as an arbitrator for New York City Civil Court, Small Claims for over four years.  Before entering the private sector, he clerked at the First and Third Departments of the Appellate Division, and for the Hon. Paul G. Feinman, a former President of LeGaL.  He also served as the reporter for the Association of Justices of the Supreme Court of New York, Committee on Pattern Jury Instructions.  Savastano graduated magna cum laude from Touro Law Center, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review.

LeGaL's outgoing President, Meredith R. Miller, will continue to serve on the Board of Directors.  Among many achievements during Miller's tenure as President were instituting and implementing LeGaL's updated referral network, initiating and guiding LeGaL's Board in a strategic planning process, strengthening LeGaL's relationship with other bar associations, supporting Legal Director Brett Figlewski in defining and expanding his role and outreach, assisting Executive Director Matthew Skinner in several successful fundraising initiatives, and leading efforts to increase LeGaL's standing and visibility in the legal profession and the greater LGBT community.

"What an intense two years to be President of LeGaL," said Miller.  "In that time, the LGBT movement achieved landmark victories, but was also met with stinging setbacks."   She added, "I am thrilled that Gennaro has stepped up to generously lend his many talents to LeGaL as President, and I'm looking forward to working with him and the rest of the Board to ensure that LeGaL remains a strong and active voice in the face of the coming challenges."

The following additional Association officers were also elected at the Board's January meeting:

Janice Grubin - First Vice President
M. Frank Francis - Secretary and Second Vice President
K. Scott Kohanowski - Treasurer

On the Foundation Board, the officers elected were:

Patrick MacMurray - Vice President

K. Scott Kohanowski - Treasurer

An induction ceremony for Savastano and the other officers will be held on Monday, February 13, 2017 at 6 p.m. at the offices of Weitz & Luxenberg.
