The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York (LeGaL) congratulates the Hon. Paul Feinman on his unanimous confirmation today to sit as the next Associate Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, our state's highest court. He has made history as the first openly gay judge to rise to that bench.
Over a whirlwind twenty-four hours, Judge Feinman first had a confirmation hearing on Tuesday before the New York State Senate Standing Committee on the Judiciary. After answering important questions about his background and record, the members of the committee voted unanimously to send his nomination to the floor for a vote by the full chamber. Today, the chamber debated the nomination and, by voice vote, also confirmed Judge Feinman unanimously. He then walked over to the Court of Appeals to immediately take his judicial oath of office from New York State Chief Judge Janet DiFiore.
We thank the members of the State Senate for carefully considering, and ultimately supporting, the nomination of Judge Feinman before the close of the legislative session. During the last few decades, many brave individuals in our community blazed a trail that led to Judge Feinman's nomination and confirmation. Looking ahead, we know Judge Feinman, a former president of LeGaL, will continue to make the New York LGBT legal community proud. We wish him all the best as he begins his term on the Court of Appeals.
