The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York (LeGaL) mourns the loss today of the brave New York lesbian who stepped forward to change history, Edie Windsor. Her articulate voice and defiant spirit helped millions of people finally understand the injustice wrought by the architecture of discrimination that was put in place for no other purpose than to deny LGBT Americans their dignity. She later assisted many local LGBT nonprofits, including LeGaL, with raising the resources they needed to continue serving and fighting for the LGBT community.
We send our deepest condolences to her widow, Judith, and the many members of LeGaL that had the pleasure to work with her as they supported her legal battle against the federal government. A vigil to remember Edie is planned for tonight outside The Stonewall Inn at 8:30 p.m.
